Beer for beautiful skin…anyone?!

Since it is March Madness I figured a lot of people are drinking beer but did you know beer extract has some amazing skin care qualities!?! Ok so not necessarily drinking the beer…sorry, BUT…it has many uses for natural skin care products.

Beer has been used topically for years! It’s thought that the women of ancient Egypt and Rome used beer regularly as part of the beauty routine to help keep the skin smooth and diminish discoloration.

Yeast extract is an excellent humectant (it is a super-hydrater) comprised of a complex mixture of proteins, sugars, and amino acids. This complex helps reduce the appearance of dark spots and hyper-pigmentation by discouraging melanin production. Anecdotal results include boosting collagen production and contributing to overall brightening. Makes it an excellent ingredient to skin lightening skincare products like SMD’s Saromae Radiance line.

Yeast is a good source of beta-glucans, which stimulates the immune system, and vitamin B. Your body requires B vitamins to maintain healthy skin and using beer yeast extract in your skincare is one the best ways to absorb it. Sounds perfect!!

Inhyunjin…skincare line, why is it so amazing!?

Inhyunjin is one of the top selling SMD/Saimdang’s skincare lines currently in Korea…and why is it so amazing let me tell you!!  Inhyunjin combines the most advanced technologies with time-tested ingredients derived from natural Asian herbs. I can give the complicated scientific reason behind the miracle serums and lotions, but let me break it down for you in simpler terms.

Personally I have been using this line for over two months and I absolutely love it and professionally I have had the privilege of research and marketing this product so I have come to know if in and out very well.  Here I am just going to give you the really fun interesting info on this super duper anti-aging line!

Peach Seed Extract – Peaches offer a bounty of skin health benefits. Perhaps this is why they are used to much in luxury skincare. Pure peach extract, while expensive due to the elaborate process required to extract the oils, is a powerhouse of vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids.  These fatty acids contain linoleic acid and oleic acid which work by helping your skin retain moisture and maintain elasticity.  As a result you will also find that your skin is softer! Peach extract works with the vitamins and nutrients already in the skin to slow the appearance of aging!!  I could go on and on about this peach stuff but you get the idea.

Fermented Skincare – the next big thing in beauty…because fermented products all have shown promising effects to help with anti-aging and elasticity of your skin!! Of course this is something Asian skincare companies have been using for years! Fermented Yurisu is an
exclusive innovation by Saimdang (Patent No. 10-0537960).  It involves the extraction and fermentation of key Asian herbal ingredients.

Chinese Matrimony Vine/Goji Berries – So after reading about these babies I am now eating them daily too!  They contain amazing anti-aging properties and antioxidants which will help replenish the youth in aging skin. This is one of the main ingredients in the Inhyunjin line.  These bad boys are the most nutritionally dense fruit on the earth so slather your face in it and eat them!!  They aren’t cheap, but who cares…

wilfordii root

Wilfordii Root Extract – Another widely used herb in Asian skincare for it’s antioxidants and anti-aging properties!!  Are you getting the picture yet?!  This line is packed with natural herbs and extracts that work on anti-aging!!

Mulberry – Mulberry is just an amazing herb in skincare period. The antioxidant properties remove toxins, unclog pores, even skin tone, moisturize, and fight blemishes. Brilliant!!

So that should give you a breakdown of why we at SMD Cosmetics refer to the Inhyunjin line as the radiant, ageless, natural skincare line. I am a fan!

SMD Snail Serum…and why it is so amazing!!

SMD makes one of the most amazing, luxurious snail creams out there…but before I talk about why this is Korea’s hot secret to beauty, let me discuss the origins of this snail cream rage!

The use of snail slime to improve skin dates back to ancient Greece, where Hippocrates, the famous physician, reportedly prescribed crushed snails and sour milk as a way to rid the skin of inflammation. In more recent times, the use of snail creams started when Chilean farmers who handled snails for the French market noticed their skin was visibly smoother. Nowadays, it is the secreted slime discovered by these farmers that is harvested to produce snail cream, not crushed up snails.

As a snail protects itself, the slime that is excreted from its body is packed with nutrients like hyaluronic acid, glycoprotein enzymes, antimicrobial and copper peptides, and proteoglycans. All of these nutrients are already commonly added to beauty products and are thought to provide many benefits to skin.

The science behind snail slime as a viable beauty cream is mostly derived from lab studies where the effects of the slime have been tested on a variety of cell cultures. In these studies, research suggests that snail slime will stimulate the production of elastin and collagen, increase fibronectin protein production, and stimulate increased proliferation of fibroblasts.

But not all snail cream is created equal…and it is not all about how much % of snail mucus is in the actual cream, it’s about how it is filtrated, formulated and what other chemicals are in the cream.  Here at SMD we do not use toxic chemicals or toxic preservatives in our products.  We also have added in some other amazing ancient Asian herbal medicine to our cream to enhance it’s benefits.

Some key ingredients in Saromae Snail Serum Concentrate:

Licorice Root – One of the oldest remedies in history…was recognized in its benefits in brightening of the skin and its ability to even out the skin tone, making it an especially treasured ingredient in beauty rituals.

Forsythia Virissima – can help reduce acne, wrinkles, and facial pigmentation over time.

Safflower Seed Oil – this is a favorite in natural skincare because it’s a botanical alternative to synthetic emollients. It’s a potent hydrator and ideal for dry, sensitive complexions.

Cimicifuga Dahurica Root – used topically to treat skin conditions such as acne. It helps to improve the feel and appearance of your skin. Based on it’s intense medicinal use by Native American Indians and it’s reputation as a great cure-all, Cimicifuga appeared in 1820 in the U.S. Pharmacopeia as an anti-inflammatory, sedative and antispasmodic ingredient. It provides soothing and bactericidal properties. This product is recommended for use in anti- blemish creams, purifying face masks, and lotions.

Paeonia Lactiflora Root -is valued for the Paeoniflorin active, which has an antioxidant effect similar to Vitamin E. It also stimulates circulation with overall skin beautifying properties. The botanical prevents lipid peroxidation in the epidermal cells for healthy skin. Its extract has been used medicinally for centuries to boost microcirculation, treat inflammation and relieve pain.

Platycodon Grandiflorum Root – contains potent antioxidants that destroy these harmful radicals before they build up in your body. This leaves your skin smooth and healthy, leaving you looking younger and revitalized.

Pueraria Lobata Root Extract – this Asian botanical helps brighten skin for a more even-looking complexion.

Beta-glucanis a natural compound, extracted from plants, that helps to maintain a youthful appearance for skin…it’s a must have anti-aging ingredient!

The ancient powers of Red Ginseng in Skincare

Red ginseng has been used for centuries and has many benefits for the skin, hair and health.  Let’s explore the miracles it does for the skin and why SMD uses Red Ginseng in the Saromae Moisture skincare line.

Reduce Wrinkles

Ginseng is most often included as an anti-aging ingredient in facial moisturizers. Several medical studies have shown its effectiveness in fighting wrinkles due to ginseng’s ability to boost skin-firming collagen. The herb also acts as a whitener, giving the skin a brighter and more youthful appearance.

Heal and Calm

Ginseng is a valuable commodity in herbal medicine for its ability to encourage skin regeneration.  It is considered a strong anti-aging skincare treatment because of its reputation for stimulating and rejuvenating skin from the inside, out. It rids your skin of free radicals that gets accumulated when your skin is regularly exposed to sunlight and environmental pollution.

  • Anti-wrinkle: A 2009 study on women over 40 with photo aged skin (skin damaged by sun exposure), reported that a mixture of red ginseng extract and other herbs improved facial wrinkles and enhanced the production of collagen, which helps strength skin.
  • Anti-aging: Another study that same year found that red ginseng extract had a protective effect against skin photo aging caused by chronic sun exposure, potentially due to its ability to increase collagen synthesis. Supporting collagen synthesis is important because as we age, collagen becomes stiffer and weaker, and turnover takes longer than when we were younger. Improving collagen production helps retain skin’s elasticity and strength.
  • Protect against sun damage: Researchers also found that it helped protect skin, preventing UVB-induced skin photo aging at very low doses.
  • Improve blood circulation: Ginseng has shown in several studies to help improve blood circulation, which can help the skin receive more of the nutrients it needs to be vital and healthy.
  • Improves acne and rosacea: Ginseng helps refine the skin and counteract dryness, and because of its anti-inflammatory properties, can help reduce acne outbreaks and may tone down rosacea and psoriasis.
  • Brightens skin tone: Some small studies on ginseng berry extract have found that it has potential in lightening and brightening skin, helping to inhibit the production of melanin, which gives skin its color and can contribute to hyper-pigmentation. Specifically, researchers found that ginseng could help protect skin from the type of pigmentation that is caused by UV radiation—the sun.

Pretty amazing stuff isn’t it?!

The Wonders of Mulberry for Your Skin

And yet another wonder of the earth that provides our skin with some amazing benefits.  What are these mulberries all about?!

Like all berries, mulberries contain lots of anti-oxidants. These are very beneficial for controlling aging. They are well known and very effective anti-aging agents. The properties of mulberries help you by clearing out dark spots and getting rid of all kinds of blemishes on the facial skin. Yes, we like that, right?

The berries, roots, and bark of mulberry are all ingredients for healthy and glowing skin.
Mulberry root not only stimulates collagen production, but it also has a strong brightening effect, lightening sun and age spots. Moreover, the root extract has a strong anti-inflammatory effect on skin, healing and calming irritations.

Mulberries are full of nutrients for dull and tired skin including: organic acids, vitamins, carotenoids, flavonoids, and pectins. They hydrate skin and protect from UV damage. Mulberries extract is safe and beneficial for eye care too, as it helps to lighten dark circles.

SMD Korea has Mulberries as one of their essential ingredients in the Li Sil skincare line coming to the U.S. in 2016!

Hibiscus Benefits for Beautiful Skin

Hibiscus has some amazing benefits for radiant skin…let’s explore them!  SMD specializes in ancient herbal science for skincare because it is effective and safe.  Hibiscus is an ingredient in several of their skincare lines and here is why…

1) Evens skin tone

One of the visible signs of skin aging is the appearance of hyper-pigmentation or age spots.  Age spots can occur due to a number of different variables, including ultraviolet radiation exposure, excess melanin production and genetics.  Due to to the slightly exfoliating effect of the organic acids found in the plant, including citric acid and malic acid, Hibiscus helps to speed up cell turnover, resulting in a more even looking skin tone.

2) Rich in antioxidants

Hibiscus is rich in antioxidants, called anthocyanocides. Antioxidants are proven to help fight skin damaging free radicals which spawn when pollutants such as ultraviolet radiation and traffic pollution make contact with the skin, and can result in premature skin aging. Not only do anthocyanocides protect against free radical damage, they also have slightly astringent properties, helping to reduce the appearance of large pores for a smoother complexion. They also have an anti-inflammatory effect and can help to soothe inflamed skin, making Hibiscus suitable for those prone to very sensitive skin.

3) Purify your complexion

As mentioned previously, Hibiscus contains gentle acids that have a slight exfoliating effect on the skin. Not only does this help with age spots, this Hibiscus benefit can encourage an all round fresher, younger, smoother looking complexion. The natural acids present in Hibiscus help to purify your skin by breaking down dead skin and increasing cell turnover, they can even help to control acne breakouts. Unlike harsh synthetic forms of these acids which can strip your skin of its natural oils, the organic acids from Hibiscus bring your skin back in balance for a naturally gorgeous, glowing complexion.

4) Intense moisture boost

Lastly, Hibiscus has a naturally high mucilage content, a sticky substance produced by plants that help with the storage of water and food. Mucilage makes a fantastic natural skin moisturizer that is gentle on sensitive skin. This high mucilage content of Hibiscus enhances the skin’s ability to retain moisture, which is a key factor in retaining a youthful complexion. The naturally moisture rich qualities of Hibiscus helps skin stay hydrated, soft and supple for longer, keeping dry, dull skin at bay.

5) The “Botox Plant”

One of the most powerful anti-aging plant actives; it’s no wonder Hibiscus is called the ‘Botox plant’. Hibiscus has a magical reputation for increasing skin elasticity to give a stunning natural youth-boost. With the incredible ability to inhibit the activity of the enzyme elastase, which is responsible for breaking down our skin’s precious elastin, Hibiscus actively combats the aging process by firming and lifting your skin.

So let’s get on the Hibiscus train!! SMD uses Hibiscus in the Saromae skincare line.
